2002-
2007
Urban regeneration project to reverse the economic and environmental
decline of an important civic, educational and business district
of the city. Appointed by the
City to prepare an urban design framework and implement the
project. The primary focus was to build public-private partnerships,
stimulate investment in the area, revitalise the depressed
ground floor retail along transportation routes and promote
the development of student accommodation and other residential
components.
The project implementation, carried out in association with
MMA architects, included the provision of new public spaces,
upgrading and widening of sidewalks, parking, lighting , and
public transport amenities to improve the character and liveability
of the area.
Legible connections with the surrounding districts are defined
and people are encouraged to use and enjoy the public environment
through the creation of a system of places built in previously
derelict or “lost spaces”.
Two specific sub-projects were the creation of the Wits Gateway
to act as a catalyst for the integration of Wits University
into Braamfontein; and the development of a citizen-friendly
information and communication centre at the Johannesburg Metropolitan
Council premises.
