Intermodal Transport Node 2002
Brown field development,
recycling existing structures on an old bus depot site into
a public transport hub, traditional healer's and fresh produce
markets. Appointed by the City to design and implement the
project. This public transport hub accommodates local and
long-distance taxi ranks and an existing train station which
historically served as the gateway to Johannesburg for miners
working on the Witwatersrand gold reef.
The project also formalizes the existing trade in traditional
medicine, in a market space which incorporates improved facilities
and public art works. Existing buildings have been converted
into consulting rooms for traditional healers, straddling
the divide between traditional spatial practices and those
of the contemporary urban context. The project is unique in
its successful understanding of the boundary between the urban
and the rural in the city, and in its consideration of the
transient commuter culture and history of the Faraday station
precinct.
