Proposal for a Johannesburg Development Agency urban design
competition. Scheme chosen as one of five finalists.
The brief called for the placement and implementation strategy
for a large urban park in the Johannesburg inner city.
The concept is to ' fill the void ' created by the railway
tracks that bisect the city centre with a series of interventions
as
multi-layered green inserts articulating and connecting different
transport facilities and in that way creating a new milieu
of constructed rooftop parks and artificial wetlands, harvesting
and processing storm water.
The park would incrementally recycle and reinvent the city’s
centre by giving it an extended green heart for active and
passive recreation and continuously staging the theatre of
life supporting the many realities and ways of being in the
city that characterise this dynamic metropolis.
