Appointed to prepare an urban design framework and precinct
plans, as well as architectural work in relation to urban
fabric and landscaping. This greenfield development on a sugarcane
farm between an existing residential suburb (Umhlanga Rocks)
and the New Town Centre is approximately 140 hectares in extent.
The site is prominently visible from the ocean and Durban
bay. Its cascading topography provides panoramic views towards
the sea and surrounding areas. Both these conditions are celebrated
in the development. The urban design principles and structuring
elements are underpinned by design and ecological intentions,
anchored on the concept of a Coastal Lattice which aims at
the creation of a new, indigenous urban landscape interweaving
layers of places for working in and living with the surrounding
natural environment.
